In the pack. Sky reflection.

A view from the discovery ship Terra Nova (1884) looking over loose pack ice with a number of large open leads of clear water. On the floe to the left is an Adelie penguin, a number of which had visited the area around the ship diving for food. The water is so still that the clouds are reflecting clearly in the water.

The print has a typed caption: 'In the pack. Sky reflection.'

Scott's diary notes that on 28 December 'The sky began to clear in the middle watch [midnight to 4am]; now we have bright, cheerful, warm sunshine...' The ship was then '...amongst floes of decidedly smaller area and the pack has loosened considerably.' [Scott's Last expedition. The Journals, (1984 edition) page 49]
