Weathered ice after blizzard at Cape Evans, looking to Castle Rock.
A view from near the ice foot at Cape Evans looking across McMurdo Sound towards Castle Rock, which became a focal point for Ponting's later photographs when the sea froze over. The ice furrows were caused by the three-day blizzard in early March. Ponting described them as 'deep irregular furrows, as though the ice had been turned over by a gigantic plough.'
Small icebergs are close to the ice foot in the middle-distance.
