Erebus and dome cloud from West Beach, 2.30pm.

A view from West Beach, McMurdo Sound, looking towards the volcano Erebus in the distance with the dome of cloud formed above it. A section of the ice-foot of the Barne Glacier is in the foreground with long icicles and frosen spray from the sea after a blizzard.

Ponting does not mention West Beach specifically, but he does recall the ice features generated by the spray from waves that froze on the ice during a blizzard in early March 1911. 'I found that the spray from waves, which during the blizzard, dashed against the ice-foot in South Bay...had frozen into very beautiful forms...'
