A landscape format photographic print of the crew of the battlecruiser HMs Lion (1910) standing or sitting on the forecastle deck. The officers are sitting in chairs with Vice Admiral David Beatty in the centre. The midshipmen and two sub-lieutenants are seated on the deck, one of them holding Beatty's bulldog. The rest of the crew are standing on on the deck or on the gun turrets and forward superstructure around A and B Turrets. A number of the sailors are sitting on the barrels of A and B turret. The photographer was standing in the bows, forward of the capstan, looking aft.
Gerald Fortescue Longhurst joined HMS Lion on 3 January 1914 as a lieutenant (Gunnery) and was discharged on 20 September 1917. During this time he had been promoted Commander on 30 June 1916 for services at the battle of Jutland.
