An informal group photograph of naval cadets sitting on the spars below the covered ship's boats on the port side Boat Deck looking forward on board the armoured cruiser HMS Cumberland (1902). Cumberland had been refitted as a cadet training ship (1907-09). Behind the cadets are the 42ft and 36ft sailing pinnace and launch covered with a canvas awning. Some of the cadets are reading while one is lying on his back on the deck.
Gerald Fortescue Longhurst joined HMS Cumberland as a lieutenant in September 1909 and was discharged on 22 December 1911.
