Album relating to the career of Commander G. F. Longhurst RN, DSO (18 August 1882-January 1921)

An off-white paper coloured ledger containing numerous cuttings, and also 98 photographs in corner mounts. The front has a family crest with the motto: 'Supera Aspectans Convexa' in a ribbon below the phoenix[?] emerging from a crown holding a key in its beak. The motto is taken from Virgil's Aeneid (volume X).

This album contains photographs and material relating to the career of Commander Gerald Fortescue Longhurst who entered the Navy in 1897. He was promoted to midshipman 1898, sub-lieutenant 1902, lieutenant 1904 and commander 1916. He was appointed gunnery officer of HMS Lion (1910) under Admiral Beatty and was present at the battle of Heligoland Bight (1914), Dogger Bank (1915) and Jutland (1916). He was awarded the DSO and Order of St Anne of Russia. In 1917 he was appointed to the Naval Ordnance Department and later was appointed to the Carnarvon training cruiser until his death in 1921. Ships represented in the album include HMS Racer (1884), HMS Barfleur (1892), HMS Cumberland (1902), HMS Lion (1910) and Russian warships. There are also photographs of naval officers including Admiral Beatty and group photographs of naval cadets and midshipmen.

The ablum includes Russian warships in 1914 and also the following vessels: HMS Racer (1884), HMS Barfleur (1892) in 1899-1902, HMS Cynthia (1898) in 1903-04, HMS Queen (1902) in 1904-06, HMS Cumberland (1902) in 1909-11, HMS Lion (1910) in 1913-16, HMS Carnarvon (1903) in 1919.
The album also includes the following : R/A C. C. P. Fitzgerald, Captain the Hon. S. C. J. Colville, Cdr. David Beatty (and as R/A and V/A in 5 Lion groups), Czar Nicholas II, Major F. J. W. Harvey RMLI (who won Victoria Cross at Jutland).
