On board the coasting barge John Bayly (1895) while under sail in the River Thames estuary, bound down. The photographer is standing on the starboard side of the deck abaft the hatch looking forward. The hatch is covered and battened down. Her bowsprit is topped and her mainsail is slightly reefed. The upper part of her mast is out of the picture. A steamer in ballast is ahead of her. Vertical format.
