Whitstable oyster vessels

A Whitstable 'yawl', the local name for a cutter-rigged sailing oyster dredger, in this case of ca. 35ft LOD, is seen bow-on from above in Whitstable harbour, lying against the harbour wall's curved wooden baulks. The boat's bowsprit is withdrawn inboard and the mast and gaff are laid on deck. Directly astern is a similar 'yawl', and astern of this latter, two beamy and bluff-bowed sailing barges with carved decorations on their bow and stern respectively. To port of the nearest 'yawl' are a clinker-built peter boat of ca. 16ft with the name 'Speedwell 11' written on its bow, and a smaller sailing boat with the name 'Spinner' painted on its transom.
