Polperro

A carvel-built gaff cutter of ca. 19ft is viewed from above the port stern quarter. The jaws of the gaff and boom are hoisted far up the mast to provide space for work on deck, while the aft ends of the gaff and boom rest on the starboard gunwale. The helmsman is apparently poling the boat away from an unseen object to the right of the image, using a long sweep such as could seemingly be used to scull the boat. A lamp on the port side near the helmsman's position, as seen in negative P75999, is in evidence. A crew member stands abaft the mast looking to starboard, while another stands before the mast. Beyond lies the boat regd FY168 seen from the starboard side, moored with sails stowed. The shore beyond the boats depicted is strongly striated slate. A slate building stands at the right margin of the image.
