Three Japanese women posing in a mock, indoor tea plantation
A colourized landscape photograph showing three Japanese women posing in a mock tea plantation in commercial photography studio. The three women are arranged in a line around a semi-circle of foliage (either tea or a plant resembling it) that have been to imitate a tea plantation. The first women is standing, her legs and feet obscured by the plant, and facing to the right of the image. She holds a round basket under her right arm and holds the top of a tea plant in with both her hands. The second woman is crouching and facing towards the camera. She has a round basket containing leaves at her feet. The third woman is also standing, facing to the right of the image and holding a basket under her right arm. The top of her head and neck is observed by a head covering. Straw, grass and/or twigs have been placed on the floor within the semicircle to simulate the outdoors; the floor of a room can be seen beyond this. The backdrop of the scene is made of plain panels, with a gap visible on one side and a join on the other. Original caption (beneath the photograph in ink): ‘Tea - plants’.
