A display of traditional Japanese music
A colourised landscape photograph showing four people performing traditional Japanese music. The two women in the middle are stood up, one facing the camera, one with her back to it. Each wears a kimono and holds a fan, fully or partially opened. A man is kneeling on the left side of the image, his mouth open, possibly singing. A woman is kneeling on the right side of the image, holding a shamisen (a stringed instrument). The scene takes place indoors, with three screens or hangings behind the group. Another, thinner hanging can be seen behind the woman with the shamisen. This hanging has images of bamboo painted on it and a vase of flowers set in front of it. Four panels of mating can be seen on the floor beneath the figures with a tray holding bowls, a platter and other vessels placed in front of one of the standing women. Original caption (handwritten in ink beneath): 'Geishas. Song + Dance - Samisan accompant.'
