A Japanese woman with a parasol and a rickshaw operator
A colourised landscape photograph of a Japanese woman sat in a pulled rickhsaw with the operator, a Japanese man, stood between the shafts. The woman is facing towards the camera and looking to the left of the image. She holds a parasol in her right hand. The rickshaw operator is facing towards the right of the image and has a hand on each shaft. His right leg is bent as if pulling (altough the vehicle is stationary). He is wearing a garment made of grass or other natural material that covers most of his body. He is also wearing a bowl-shaped hat. The rickshaw has two spoked wheels. The scence appears to have been taken indoors. Some sort of screen or unpainted wall can be seen behind the figures and grass or some other form of vegetion appears to have been aranged at their feel. A screen, panel, door or other fixture/fitting can be seen at the left side of the image. Original caption (in ink, beneath): 'Rainy-weather rig for rickshaw coolie'.
The photograph was probably made in a commercial photography studio. Many similar photographs were produced in Japan during the 1800s, often for sale to Westerners.
'Coolie' is a derogatory term used to describe low-skilled, low-paid Asian labourers.
