A photograph album with maroon boards, a weak spine, and 37 leaves. All the relevant photographs have been copied.
Contents: This album relates to the career of Henry Thomas Knapman while serving as an Engineer on HMS Raleigh (1873) and HMS Kent (1901) on the China Station. Photographs of ships include HMS Ajax (1880), Severn (1885) and Kent (1901), and the China Squadron 1891-1894. Places include Simon’s Bay, Shanghai, Japan, St Helena and Keyham College. There are also group photographs of officers, Chinese pirates and Japanese Gheishas. Identified photographer includes Hippolyte Arnoux.
Henry Thomas Knapman was born in Aden in 1865. He was promoted Assistant Engineer 1885, Engineer 1890, Chief Engineer and Engineer Lieutenant 1900, Engineer Commander 1903 and retired in 1908 with rank of Captain. During WWI in 1915 he served in the transport Aragon (1905) which was taking troops to the Dardanelles. Reverted to the retired list in 1916.
