Lord Lewin and General Khan saluting the Punjab Frontier Force Memorial
A colour landscape photograph of General Iqbal Khan, Lord Lewin and an unidentified Pakistani officer saluting the Punjab Frontier Force Memorial. The three men are facing towards the left side off the photograph, where part of the stone base and metal plaque of the memorial is visible. They stand at the bottom of two stone steps. Four Pakistani soldiers, also saluting, and two women can be seen beyond this, with a metal perimeter fence and trees in the background. Original caption (beneath, typed): ‘Piffers War Memorial – Abbottabad.’
‘Piffers’ is a nickname for the Punjab Frontier Force Memorial. This memorial, first unveiled in 1924, was originally sited in Kohat and only commemorated soldiers killed in the First World War. It was rededicated in 1955 to commemorate soldiers killed in the Second World War and, in 1964, moved to Abbottabad.
