A rickshaw puller at Yokohama harbour

A colourised landscape photograph showing Yokohama harbour. An area of bare earth road can be seen in the immediate foreground. In the centre of the image is a rickshaw operator sat on a rickshaw with its shafts resting on the ground. There are three pine trees, one on the far right and two on the far left of the image, visible nearby. Behind him is a row of bollards connected by chains. A figure, blurred, can be seen between two of them. Behind this, at least 12 boats can be seen in the water, some with figures visiable aboard. A brick building and a pier can be seen on the other side of the water. A steamship is at anchor on the far side of the pier. In the backfround of the image, behind the pier, the masts of a sailing vessel can be seen. Original caption (within the photograph): 'B 68 BUND OF YOKOHAMA'

'Bund' comes from a Hindustani word for a dyke or embankment. Europeans used the word describe to embanked quays (most famously at Shanghai in China).

The brick building is the Yokohama Customs Office Inspection Bureau, built in 1894 and designed by the architect Yorinaka Tsumaki.
