A rather naive depiction of Blackheath around the beginning of the nineteenth century. The house at the corner of the wall along the south side of Greenwich Park was built in 1729 on ground forming part of the Montagu House property and was called Park Corner House: after being occupied by a George Moult it gave rise to the name 'Mole's Corner' which appears on some maps for this angle of the Park (see also PAF2891). Montagu House itself - a country residence of the Dukes of Montagu - was just to the north (to left here and not visible) comprising a short row of two 17th-century buildings combined: both it and Park Corner House were demolished in 1815. The south gate to the Park is at the centre of the wall on what is now Charlton Way. The large square house immediately right of the wall has not been identified but the church tower to the left is St Luke's, Charlton, with the turrets of Charlton House appearing above trees to its right. The building to left of the road at the top of Shooter's Hill is likely to be the Bull Inn, dating from 1749 and still there (though now a building of 1881). Opposite it is Severndroog Castle, the memorial tower commemorating Commodore Sir William James and his capture of Suvarnadurg, the island stronghold of the Indian pirate Tulagree Angria on the west coast of India in 1755: this was erected by James's widow in 1784, to the design of Richard Jupp, in sight of their house at Eltham. Morden College is likely to be the building at far right behind the windmills: the other one to its left remains for identification. The Blackheath mills in the foreground were typical of dozens that could still be found in and around London at that time. [PvdM 10/14]
