'Mount Pers, Piz Palu, Zupo, Crastaguzza, Bernina, Morteratch & Buval; and the Morteratch Glacier; from near Montebello on the Bernina Road, 1880' [Switzerland]

No. 38 in Fanshawe's Baltic and later album, 1843 - 83. Captioned by the artist on the album page below the image, as title. A view of the Bernina Range, on the eastern Swiss border with Italy, of which Piz Bernina, 4049 m is the highest of the peaks shown. Munt Pers is 3207 metres; Piz Palü, 3905; Piz Zupò 3,995; Crast' Agüzza, 3869; Piz Morteratsch, 3751: 'Buval' may be Piz Alv, 3995 m.

This is a classic general view of them across the Morteratsch Glacier, with the party in the foreground presumably being Fanshawe's family or friends. Fanshawe retired from active service, aged 65, in November 1879 and this is one of a group of drawings done on holiday in Switzerland the following year (PAI4709 - 4712).
