'The villages of Silvaplana and Campfer, the Lake of Silvaplana and the Piz della Margna, Engadine [with] The Piz Julier, 1880' [Switzerland]
No. 40 in Fanshawe's Baltic and later album, 1843 - 83. Three sections stuck together on the page and captioned by the artist below the image, as title. Silvaplana and Champfèr are both villages with connected lakes in the Engadine valley of the Graubünden canton of south-eastern Switzerland. Piz da la Margna, 3158m, is part of the Bernina Range; Piz Julier or Guglia, 3380 m, is part of the adjoining Albula Range of the Alps.
Fanshawe retired from active service, aged 65, in November 1879 and this is one of a group of drawings done on holiday in Switzerland the following year (PAI4709 - 4712). He probably drew the lower left section of this composition first and then extended it with the strips on the right and top left to improve the scale and proportions as well as bringing in Piz Julier.
