'Gulf of Smyrna and part of the city from the heights of Cuklugah'

Mounted in album with PAI4872-PAI4880.; No.1. This shows the Gulf of Smyrna (Izmir) from the East, with the Kadifekale on the small hill to the left, and Uzun Ada and Denizli in the distance. The viewpoint is near the ruins of the Temple of Diana, near a village known at the time as Khalcar-burnu (modern Khalkapınar or Halkapınar, but not to be confused with the railway station in modern Izmir of the same name). ' Cuklugah' in the inscription here in the bottom margin may be a misunderstanding of that name. We are grateful to Briony Llewellyn and Charles Newton for this explanation (2017), based on another Schranz drawing from the same viewpoint in private hands, also with a fragmentary inscription.
