The forcing of the Strait of Simonoseki (Southern Japan), September 1864
Watercolour on wove paper, laid down on card, signed with initials and dated lower left "CC-/64". First-hand record by a naval gunner present during the action, one of the earliest encounters with the Japanese. Corresponds precisely to the Laird Clowes account, which contains a plan of the Strait showing the positions of the ships. The screw battleship in the centre of the drawing is the CONQUEROR.
