Journal of Vice-Admiral John Byron HMS DOLPHIN, contemporary copy, 1764-1766.
A contemporary copy of the journal of John Byron, kept during the circumnavigation voyage of HMS DOLPHIN, 1764-1766.
This account (or one page for page the same) may have been used by John Hawkesworth in preparing his book on voyages of exploration in the Pacific, published in 1773. A note on the flyleaf indicates that it came from the Montagu family library at Hinchingbrooke House. It had been in the hands of Philip Stephens, former Secretary to the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty, Lord Ranelagh, and then Vice-Admiral Sir William A. Montagu.
