India Extra Gangem ['India beyond the Ganges']

'India Extra Gangem' ['India beyond the Ganges']. A version of this volume published posthumously under the direction of Pennant's son David, as part of the 'Outlines of the Globe, Vol. III: The View of Inda Extra Gangem, China, and Japan' (London, 1800).

Itinerary roughly follows the coast eastwards from 'Chittigong' [Chattogram] in modern Bangladesh to the 'Bay of Tonquin' [Vịnh Bắc Bộ / Gulf of Tonkin] and the 'City of Cachao' [Hà Nội / Hanoi] in modern Vietnam.

According to Pennant's correspondence with Richard Bull, this volume was begun around December 1791: see 'Curious Travellers Editions' [https://editions.curioustravellers.ac.uk/], Item ID 1142.

The section from pp. 107–140 comprises an English translation of the Arriani Periplus Maris Erythræi, i.e. the Greek Periplus of the Erythraean Sea attributed to Arrian. The translation is by the Rev. Robert Williams Curate of Whiteford [Whitford], and dated 1792.

Two indexes and an itinerary in rear of volume.
