The Empires of China and Japan

'The Empires of China and Japan'. A version of this volume published posthumously under the direction of Pennant's son David, as part of the 'Outlines of the Globe, Vol. III: The View of India Extra Gangem, China, and Japan' (London, 1800).

Last page of the main text dated 'January 29th 1793' at Downing. According to Pennant's correspondence with Richard Bull, he was 'amazingly deep in China' by June 1792, and had seen 'the need to tack to China, Japan' in his Outlines by September 1792: see 'Curious Travellers Editions' [https://editions.curioustravellers.ac.uk/], Item ID 1155 & 1160.

Title page adapted from Wenceslaus Hollar's engraving for the title page of J[ohan] Nieuhof, 'An Embassy from the East-India Company to the Emperour of China' (London, 1669).

After an introductory ethnographic, historical, and mercantile account of the Chinese empire (pp. 105–163), the topographical itinerary for China follows the coast from the 'Island of Hai-nan [Hainan]' to 'Kanton [Guangzhou]' (pp. 163–175), then traces the 'passage by water...to Peking [Beijing]' via the Grand Canal (pp. 175–194), following the route taken by Johan Nieuhof (1618–1672). The coastal tour from 'Kanton [Guangzhou]' then resumes as far as the Korean peninsula (pp. 220–226). A final topographical section is entitled 'Nations Adjacent to China' (pp. 227–248), and ends with a 'Faunula of China' (pp. 249–268) and an itinerary and index to the preceding sections (including 'India Extra Gangem').

Some information on glass production (p. 128), and a sizeable chart entitled 'Price Current Goods at Kanton Exports and Imports 1792' (pp. 145–159) gathered from 'my worthy friend Thomas Fitzhugh esqr. (long resident in China)', and latterly a Director of the East India Company.

The Japanese section (pp. 249–341) follows the archipelagos east of 'Formosa [Taiwan]' to 'the empire of Japan' proper, giving a general account of the latter, and ending with islands to the north and 'De Vries's Strait', with a separate itinerary and index.
