Hot on the heels of April's Item of the Month, Mark takes a look at why the Galipolli campaign occured..... The 1915 assault on the Gallipoli peninsula was an attempt by British Empire and French forces to secure the Dardanelles straits as a first step to opening up a sea route via which they could send aid to their ally, the Russian Empire. With the Imperial German Navy controlling the Baltic route, an attack on the Ottoman Empire who controlled the straits and were perceived as the weak link, was advocated as the best option for achieving this. The Caird Library and Archive holds a variety of material relating to these events including journals and diaries from men who participated (see April's Item of the month for example ) and numerous works published in the century that followed analysing this disastrous campaign. The Journal collection also includes several titles such as The Daily Graphic which show how the landings were reported at the time. These can be searched for via the Library and Archive catalogues Mark (Library Assistant)
