In this letter, Maskelyne provides Pigott with his observations of lunar transit of the mean as way of determining longitude. Maskelyne comments on Toaldo's pamphlet and the usefulness of the lunar distance method to travellers. Maskelyne expresses his thanks for Pigott's observations of the fireball seen on 12 September 1784.
