Letters from John Short to Ella Ambrose January to March 1934.

In January Short writes about how he is going to be a best man at a shipmate's wedding in Bombay, his ongoing maths studies, and his daily routine aboard SS VARSOVA. They stop regularly (and have been for the past year) at various ports in and around the Persian Gulf, including Bushire (Bushehr), Busreh (Basra), Mahommerah (Al Muhammarah), and travel back and forth from Bombay, stopping at Muscat and Karachi. On 13th January, Short describes how one of the greasers has been caught using rat traps to catch fish in the Shatt Al Arab River. On the 16th January he expresses much amusement about the trouble a lady passenger (the Persian Admiral's wife) whom they have nicknamed 'Mary' is causing the Chief and Skipper. On 29th January he desribes the wedding at which he was best man, and warns Ambrose that she will be receiving a piece of wedding cake in the post. February and March's letters largely concern Short's plans for his wedding, and his future life with Ambrose, with some details of daily life aboard SS VARSOVA.
