Letters from John Short to Ella Ambrose July to September 1934.

In July, Short is aboard the SS WAROONGA, which is on a voyage from Hong Kong to Japan. They are transporting ships to be scrapped, which means there is little work for Short. Tuesday 10th July is his last day on the WAROONGA. Ashore in Osaka, he remarks upon the modernity of the city. By 8th August, Short is sailing on SS TAKADA, and describes passengers picked up at Hong Kong on the voyage back West. By 16th August he has again changed ships, is now aboard SS GURNA and is very happy with the 'general air of homeliness about the place' as they make their way around the Indian coast. 31st August he describes fishermen in Madras harpooning turtles. The next day he writes about the engineer's cat, a 'big black tom' called Whiskers, which he cares for. The cat comes up a lot in the September letters, as Short goes into much detail about daily life aboard SS GURNA.
