Letters from John Short to Ella Ambrose October to December 1934.

Aboard the SS GURNA, Short writes on the 27th October about how ants have made a nest in his camera. He has stopped drinking and cut down on smoking in order to save more money, and asks Ambrose her opinion on their financial prospects for a home. In his November letters he writes about his daily routine on shore in India and aboard ship, and has been meeting or corresponding with his past shipmates, all of whom seem to be getting married soon - he wonders if he and Ambrose will have any single friends left by the time they finally marry. He complains that his eyesight is deteriorating from his many hours of studying. 16th November, he is back in Bombay, but is going to keep social activities to a minimum to save money. The next day he writes about journals he would like Ambrose to send him from England - the Journal of Commerce has an engineering supplement he needs. On the 22nd he writes about other couples who have a long-distance relationship and how they cope or not. 23rd November he is sailing towards Bhavnagar, a port in the Gulf of Khambhat. He describes it as 'very treacherous for navigation being full of shoals and sandbanks' and very strong tides. He wishes Ambrose happy birthday for the 21st. By 4th December Short is in Karachi. On 11th December he writes about his time in Karachi, fishing with the Skipper. His final letter runs from Christmas Eve to 2nd January. He describes Christmas day aboard SS GURNA, and accepts stoically the fact that he will not be spending New Year's Eve on shore.
