Orders relating to Peninsular War operations, July 1808.
Orders received by Gosselin while in command of HMS AUDACIOUS (1785) at Yarmouth and Spithead, prior to operations off Portugal, dated between 10 and 27 July 1808:
(1) Copy of a memorandum to Captain Smith in command of the bomb vessel HMS DEVASTATION (1804), directing him to fall in with the convoy of transports and proceed to the Downs. Signed by Vice-Admiral Billy Douglas at the Admiralty Office at Yarmouth, dated 10 July 1808.
(2) Copy of a letter sent via Commodore Owen, directing the transports carrying troops under the command of Lieutenant-General Sir John Moore and Major General Paget to proceed to Spithead without anchoring at the Downs. Signed by William Wellesley Pole, First Secretary to the Admiralty, dated 15 July 1808.
(3) and (4) Two letters expressing approval for Gosselin’s decision to keep the bomb vessel HMS ZEBRA (1780) with the convoy and then to wait at Spithead for further orders, signed by John Barrow, Second Secretary to the Admiralty, dated 18 and 21 July 1808.
(5) Letter from the Admiralty directing Gosselin to take the ZEBRA and transports now at Spithead, proceed to the Tagus, and there put himself under the command of Admiral Sir Charles Cotton, Commander-in-Chief on the coast of Portugal, dated 21 July 1808.
(6) Letter from the Admiralty directing Gosselin to take the sloop HMS EGERIA (1807) under his command, dated 23 July 1808.
(7) Letter from the Admiralty directing Gosselin to provide the Lieutenant-Generals Sir John Moore, Mackenzie Fraser and John Hope with a passage to the place of their destination, dated 23 July 1808.
(8) and (9) Two letters directing Gosselin to receive on board 1,000 muskets, also a supply of flints and cartridges, distributing them among other vessels if necessary. Signed by Admiral George Montagu, Commander-in-Chief, on board HMS ROYAL WILLIAM (1670) at Spithead, dated 26 and 27 July 1808.
(10) Letter directing Gosselin to take command of the sloop HMS BRAZEN (1808), signed by Montagu, dated 27 July 1808.
