Orders relating to Peninsular War operations, August 1808 to March 1809.

Orders received by Gosselin while in command of HMS AUDACIOUS (1785), dated between 4 August 1808 and 3 March 1809:

(1) Letter to Gosselin at Lisbon, acknowledging his letter regarding the return into port of the two transports BALTIC TRADER and RALPH NICHOLSON, signed by John Barrow, Second Secretary to the Admiralty, dated 4 August 1808.
(2) Letter from Admiral Sir Charles Cotton, Commander-in-Chief on the coasts of Spain and Portugal, directing Gosselin to put himself under his command, given on board HMS HIBERNIA (1804) off the Tagus, dated 28 August 1808.
(3) Letter from the Admiralty acknowledging Gosselin’s letter of 21 August with news of the arrival of the AUDACIOUS with the transports under convoy in the Tagus and approving of these proceedings, dated 2 September 1808.
(4) Memorandum directing Gosselin to deliver the arms and ammunition for the use of the fleet in the proportions to be specified, signed by Lawrence W. Halsted, captain of the fleet on the HIBERNIA off the Tagus, dated 4 September 1808.
(5) Letter from Cotton directing Gosselin to put himself under the command of Captain William Bradley of HMS PLANTAGENET (1801), given on board the HIBERNIA off the Tagus, dated 18 December 1808.
(6) Letter in pursuance of instructions from the Admiralty, directing Gosselin to put himself under the command of Rear-Admiral Michael De Courcy, given on board HMS TONNANT (captured 1798) at Corunna, dated 30 December 1808.
(7) Letter acknowledging receipt of the news of the arrival of the AUDACIOUS at Spithead, having on board Lieutenant-General Hope and his staff, together with that of the late Lieutenant-General Sir John Moore. Signed by Barrow, dated 25 January 1809.
(8) Letter informing Gosselin that the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty are pleased to allow him to leave the AUDACIOUS without waiting to be replaced, signed by Admiral Sir Roger Curtis, on HMS ROYAL WILLIAM (1670) at Spithead, dated 3 March 1809.
