A series of loose items from within the journals including a photograph of the MEDWAY with notes written directly onto the photograph stating the Stanley was a cadet aged 16 when he joined and has a quote of Dr Samuel Johnson written on; a photograph of the Belgian Barque L'AVENIR with notes stating it was lost around the Cape Horn February 1938; 3 newspaper clippings and poems about duty dated 26 August 1917.

Administrative / biographical background
The MEDWAY was a four masted barque, prevouisly called AMA BEGNAKOA, in 1910 it was purchased from Sota y Aznar, Montevideo and renamed MEDWAY and used as training ship by Devitt and Moore Ocean Training Ship Limited. In 1918 it was sold to Anglo-Saxon Petroleum Co., converted to steam tanker and renamed Myr Shell then scrapped in 1933.
