Photocopied manuscript with transcript of a diary kept by Mrs Lavinia Catherine Adams, wife of Master mariner Robert Adams, on a voyage in the LADY ST JOHN, from Salcombe to Newfoundland, 1898.
The photocopy of the manuscript is coil bound and has a xerox of a print depicting the LADY ST JOHN on the front cover. There is an annotation inside the front cover with the title of the document and "Presented by her niece Peggy Wingate Cleave. July 1980". The transcription is typed and consists of 24 pages plus title page. Adams describes the voyage, which begins on 18 May, in some detail, mainly focusing on the social aspects, (including news of a stowaway who had left home because his step mother mistreated him) and her time onshore in various locations, which include some geographic descriptions (of the hills around Placentia, Newfoundland, for example). She covers both the outgoing and return voyages, ending in early 1899.
