Xerox copy of an incomplete journal (27 pages) kept by Stoker Petty Officer Ellis Arthur Godfrey while serving with the British submarine flotilla attached to the Russian Baltic Fleet between 1915 and 1918.
The journal starts with a voyage from Liverpool to Archangel on the cargo liner UMONA (1910), beginning on 17 September 1915. This was followed by train journeys ending at Reval (now Tallinn) in Estonia. Godfrey later served on the submarine HMS E19 (1915) and also the Russian TIGR (1915). The journal mentions a visit made by the Tsar to the E19, Christmas celebrations in Reval, his marriage to an Estonian girl, events relating to the revolutions in Russia, and the sinking of several German ships in the Baltic. It ends 8 January 1918, during his journey home, following the armistice between Russia and Germany.

Godfrey was born in Liverpool in 1889 and entered the Royal Navy for an engagement period of 12 years in 1909. He served on the armoured cruiser HMS LANCASTER (1902) in the Mediterranean between 1910 and 1912. He was promoted to the rank of leading stoker in 1914 and stoker petty officer in 1916. He served on the submarine HMS E19 (1915) in the Baltic between 1916 and 1918. At the end of the First World War he transferred to the Royal Fleet Reserve and was then employed as a fireman on merchant ships, including the TEGGYSMITH ex JAN VAN BRAKEL (1919) of Cardiff and the HYPATIA (1902) of Liverpool. He died in 1927. His record of service in the Royal Navy can be found under the reference ADM 188/875/4143 at The National Archives.
