Xerox copy of a journal kept by Stoker Petty Officer Ellis Arthur Godfrey, 1915-1918.

Xerox copy of an incomplete journal (27 pages) kept by Stoker Petty Officer Ellis Arthur Godfrey while serving with the British submarine flotilla attached to the Russian Baltic Fleet between 1915 and 1918.

The journal starts with a voyage from Liverpool to Archangel on the cargo liner UMONA (1910), beginning on 17 September 1915. This was followed by train journeys ending at Reval (now Tallinn) in Estonia. Godfrey later served on the submarine HMS E19 (1915) and also the Russian TIGR (1915). The journal mentions a visit made by the Tsar to the E19, Christmas celebrations in Reval, his marriage to an Estonian girl, events relating to the revolutions in Russia, and the sinking of several German ships in the Baltic. It ends 8 January 1918, during his journey home, following the armistice between Russia and Germany.
