Administrative / biographical background
He became a member the Institute of Marine Engineers in 1922. He was appointed third engineer to the MAMARI, Shaw Saville and Albion Liner, in 1911. He received his first appointment as chief engineer in the KUMARA in 1922 and the COPTIC, the first Shaw Saville motorship in 1928. First sailed as assistant engineer in the SS AUCKLAND CASTLE from Newcastle to Penarth to load coal for Gibraltar in. He made twenty voyages around Cape Horn and more than fifty around the world. Gibson was ashore for two years from 1932 in Belfast and Glasgow, as engineer inspector of building motorships the WAIRANGI and the DOMINION MONARCH. He served during both the world wars and was awarded the Commander of the British Empire (C. B. E.) on 1 January 1945, for his services at sea in dangerous waters during the war. He was appointed Commodore Chief-engineer of the Shaw Savill Line and appointed to the DOMINION MONARCH. He was also an inspector of machinery for the company. He served on the DOMINION MONARCH since she was built in 1939, until the end of his career, retiring in 1952 after 45 years of service.
