Born 17 March 1904 in Brixham, Devon. Harris came from a family of fishing boat skippers. He began his career as an apprentice with the Hain Steam Ship Company in 1919, aged 15. His first voyage was on the 'Tregarthen' which lasted for two years from 24 January 1920. He advanced from 3rd mate to 1st mate to Captain. He remained with E.H. & Co until he obtaind the Extra Masters certificate in 1929. Joined A. Holt and Company and stayed with them until retirement. Worked on Brixham trawlers in the 1920's and 1930's. In charge of lifeboat training school in 1946. Received his pension in 1965 at the age of 61.
