Collection of letters relating to William Cornwallis in the East Indies.

Documents relating to warrants and instructions issued by the Commissioners of the Navy 1789 - 1804, the majority of which are addressed to William Cornwallis, naval Commander-in-Chief in the East Indies.
The collection also contains a 'Roll of the Honorable Mayor General Wellesly's Tent Lascars entertained at Calcutta'. This roll contains the names of one Tindal and six Lascars alongside their wages in Garrison, in Camp and in Bengal.
Additionally, the collection contains a list of provisions obtained in Madras, 6th September 1789 under the title 'The Honorable Commodore Cornwallis Steward Me Luck Ayres'.
Other items include; Letters regarding insufficiencies in the provision of goods and medicine both to and from the Victualling Office, signals to use in the day and night for communication betweens ships and a 'secret' letter to Cornwallis, relating to a plan to protect, refit and refresh squadrons and Ships of War during the various seasons and conditions. The plan is signed by Chatham, Bayham and Hood, dated 3rd February 1789.
