Administrative / biographical background
Captain Henry Daniel DSC, MBE (1887-1958) went to sea aged 13 in the barque Banca. He also served in the barque Lady Wolseley and the 4-masted ship Marion Lightbody. In 1905 he obtained his second mate's certficate, in 1907 his first mate's certificate and in 1909 his master's certificate. In 1910 he joined the Lamport and Holt Line and in about 1912 the Houlder Line. In 1917 he was master of the Canonesa when she was torpedoed off Worthing. She did not sink and was brought to port for repair. It was for this action that Captain Daniel was awarded the DSC. After the war he was appointed Houlder Brothers marine superintendent at Montevideo, During World War II, Captain Daniel acted as consular shipping security officer and deputy Ministry of War Transport representative. For these services he was created MBE in 1944. During his years in Uruguay Captain Daniel acted as Lloyd's special salvage officer supervising the refloating of stranded ships. At the time of the battle of the River Plate, Captain Daniel wrote a first-hand account of the Admiral Graf Spee's departure and scuttling which was published in the Daily Telegraph and which turned out to be the first news of the warship's fate to be received in this country. (Information published in 'Sea Breezes' 1958).
