Administrative / biographical background
Johnstone entered the Navy in 1900 as a cadet at the BRITANNIA training establishment. He served as a midshipman in the DIADEM, HOOD, and VENERABLE between 1901 to 1903; he served in the EXMOUTH as sub-lieutenant, after he was promoted to this position on 15 September 1904. He was promoted to lieutenant on 1 April 1907 and served in the ACHILLES. He served in the Navy during World War One and he served in the ALERT, NORTHBROOK, BEE and ORPHEUS, amongst others. Whilst serving in the MOTH in the autumn of 1920 in the West River he earmed the thanks of the Consul General at Canton for his firm and tactful conduct. He was promoted to captain on 31 December 1920 and received the D. S. O on 11 November 1919 for services in command of the HUMBER. He was placed on the retired list as captain on 3 May 1931 and still continued to serve in the Navy take positions ashore, within the Admiralty.
