Administrative / biographical background
Dick received his training at HMS EXCELLENT, entering on 7 May 1917. He then joined the VIVID, 17 July 1917, the BLAKE on 4 March 1918 and the ARIEL on 25 June 1918. On 14 November he was admitted to Granton with influenza and remained there for three weeks. He received honours for services in Grand Fleet Destroyers during WWI between 1 January and 30 June 1918, serving as midshipman. He was made Chevalier of the crown of Romania for bravery at sea. He was transferred to the Permanent List as Sub- Lieutenant, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve from 3 September 1921 and with Seniority on 3 September 1921. He was within the Clyde Division whilst in the RNVR. His service record is available via Documents Online via the National Archives Website, reference: ADM 337/123/373.
