Wrey, William Bourchier Sherard, Captain, 1865-1926.

This sub-collection relates to Captain William Bourchier Sherard Wrey (1865-1926) and forms part of the Wrey and Greive family papers. It consists of midshipman's journals, 1882 to 1885; photographs, 1882 to 1918; typescript copies of office diaries, 1918 to 1919; and official papers relating to Wrey's role as Principal Naval Transport Officer at Southampton, 1914 to 1919.

Administrative / biographical background
Wrey was born in Devon in 1865 and entered the Navy in 1878. As a midshipman in HMS SUPERB, he was present at the bombardment of Alexandria in 1882, and was in HMS CARYSFORT during the attack on Suakim in 1884. Still on the Mediterranean Station, he served in HMS TEMERAIRE between 1884 and 1885. He was promoted to lieutenant in 1888 and then spent eight years on the China Station. In 1897 he married Flora Bathurst Greive, daughter of Vice-Admiral William Samuel Greive and his wife Flora Greive. Wrey was promoted to commander in 1900. He was made Divisional Officer of the Coast Guard, Southern District, with the rank of captain, in 1909. At the outbreak of war he was recalled to service as Principal Naval Transport Officer at Southampton and remained in that role until 1918.
