Brown-Greive (formerly Brown), John Tatton, General, Royal Marine Light Infantry, 1795-1880.

This sub-collection relates to General John Tatton Brown-Greive (1795-1880) and forms part of the Wrey and Greive family papers. It consists of memoranda relating to his service in the Royal Marine Light Infantry.

Administrative / biographical background
John Tatton Brown was born in 1795. He was an ensign in the Royal Marines in 1811 and was made a lieutenant in 1829. He served in the Peninsular War in 1812, the attack on Algiers in 1816, and the destruction of Greek pirates on the island of Candia in 1826. Before proceeding to the coast of Syria in 1840 he was promoted to the rank of captain. After that campaign his active service ceased, but he continued to be promoted and reached the rank of general in 1867. He added the name Greive to his surname on marrying his second wife, Jane Elliott Greive, who was heiress of James Greive of Ord House, Berwick-upon-Tweed, in 1872. General Brown-Greive died at Berwick in 1880.
