This sub-collection relates to Captain Lord Francis Granville Godolphin Osborne (1864-1924) and forms part of the Wrey and Greive family papers. It consists of journals, and watch, station and quarter bills, 1887-1889; and some commissions, certificates and other service documents, 1879-1919.
Administrative / biographical background
Osborne was born in 1864, the second son of George Godolphin Osborne, 9th Duke of Leeds. He became a cadet on HMS BRITANNIA in 1877. He was promoted to the rank of midshipman in 1879 and to sub-lieutenant in 1884. Between 1888 and 1889 he served on the battleship HMS AUDACIOUS and the corvette HMS SAPPHIRE in the Far East and was promoted to lieutenant. He then served on the screw yacht tender HMS WILDFIRE, the corvette HMS RUBY, the torpedo ram HMS POLYPHEMUS and then the Royal yacht HMS OSBORNE. In 1896 he resigned his commission shortly before his marriage to Blanche Ruth Brooke Tatton Greive, daughter of Vice-Admiral William Samuel Greive and his wife Flora Grieve née Robertson. His commission was restored on the establishment of the Emergency List in 1901. He was promoted to the rank of commander in 1905 and to captain in 1918. He died in 1924.
