Logs of the SWALLOW and the SCORPION, and papers relating to Captain William Selby, Bombay Marine
Volume of logs kept on the East India Company packet SWALLOW (1779), commanded by Captain George Curtis, on a voyage from Madras to Dover, between 21 September 1791 and 10 February 1792; and the Bombay Marine snow SCORPION, commanded by Captain William Selby, from Madras to England, between 21 September 1793 and 9 January 1794 (not completed). There are also some notes on cash accounts.
Three loose items are inserted:
Letter from Captain William Selby to Robert Kitson, requesting him to make arrangements for his family and finances, dated 11 July 1794. It explains how the SCORPION was captured by a French fleet bound for America, and arrived at Chesapeake on 11 February 1794.
Letter addressed to the Honourable Court of Directors of the United Company of Merchants trading in the East Indies, asking them to grant Selby and the officers of the SCORPION their pay, allowances and compensation, while they are kept on parole and unable to return to their stations in India.
Note regarding papers from the estate of Captain William Selby in the possession of his executors after 1801 and later lodged with solicitors and the Court of Chancery until the settlement of a suit in 1829.
