Administrative / biographical background
James Henry Crowe was born near Limerick in 1821. He went to sea in 1838 as an apprentice on vessels owned by Francis Spaight and used in the emigrant trade between Limerick and Quebec. He later qualified as master (certificate number 6136) and was employed on ships belonging to the ports of Glasgow and London. In 1857 he decided to finish his seagoing career and emigrate with his family to Australia. He later took over a retail store at Mount Torrens in the Adelaide Hills. He died at Glenelg near Adelaide in 1898.
