Memoirs of an un-named foretopman in the Royal Navy from 1850 to 1864. Written in an exercise book, printed by E.J. Arnold & Son LTD.
He started his training aboard HMS VICTORY in 1850 and later took part in suppressing the slave trade at Lagos in the PENELOPE 1851 and was present at the Battle of Bombarsund, Crimean War in 1854. He talks about the pursuit of the Russian frigate DIANA on board the NANKIN, 1855, and later witnessed the outbreak of the Indian Mutiny in 1857.
The memoir is in part only, ending with his service in the BOMBAY in 1864. The BOMBAY caught fire at Montevideo, South American Station.
The collection also contains 3 additional items; a newspaper cutting and transcription relating to the funeral of Mr W. Fraser and a handwritted note 'by a late reader' regarding HMS PEPPERPOT.
