The genesis of the naval profession / Norbert Elias ; edited and with an introduction by Renâe Moelker and Stephen Mennell.
Drawn largely from unpublished manuscripts, this compilation illustrates Norbert Elias' theory that the emergence of the professional naval officer in Great Britain was related both to the necessities of naval warfare and to the structure of society on land. Specifically, the innovation of the rank of midshipman meant that the British were able to mitigate the impact of social barriers between officers and ratings and gradually merge the two hierarchies.

The great naval game : Britain and Germany in the age of empire /Jan Ruger.
"This book is about the theatre of power and identity that unfolded in and between Britain and Germany in the decades before the First World War. It explores what contemporaries described as the cult of the navy: the many ways in which the navy and the sea were celebrated in the fleet reviews, naval visits and ship launches that were watched by hundreds and thousands of spectators."--Dust jacket.

U-48 : the most successful U-boat of the Second World War /Franz Kurowski.
Following the signing of the Treaty of Versailles in 1919, Germany was not permitted to build or operate submarines. However, clandestine training took place on Finnish and Spanish submarines and U-boats were still built to German designs in Dutch yards. After the outset of the Second World War, a fleet of U-boats was created in Germany and U-48 took up its place around England. By August 1941, U-48, the most successful boat of the Second World war, had sunk 56 merchant ships.

The lifeboats of Wexford and Rosslare Harbour / Nicholas Leach.
The Wexford & Rosslare Harbour lifeboat stations are amongst the most famous of any in the United Kingdom and Ireland. They currently operate the most modern lifeboat fleet, undertake many rescues each year and are the latest in a long line of rescue craft to guard Wexford and Rosslare bays. The first lifeboats were operated in the early nineteenth century and some outstanding feats of bravery, courage and skilful seamanship were accomplished using sail and oar-powered boats. The first motor lifeboats arrived in the 1920s and since the 1980s fast modern self-righting lifeboats have been based in Rosslare Harbour. This unique book details the history of all these boats, from the small types through to the current operation of the modern 17 Severn class which can be seen at Rosslare Harbour ferry port. It includes many outstanding illustrations and photographs of all the lifeboats, recounts all the famous rescues and details generations of volunteer crews.

Albert medals awarded to Royal Marines : with particular reference to Marine Albert Streams AM (served 1921-1943). /by Derek Oakley
"The Albert medal was instituted in 1866 and was awarded for supreme gallantry not in the face of the enemy. In 1940, when King George VI introduced the George Cross and George Medal it ceased to be awarded. In 1971 surviving holders of the Albert Medal were allowed to exchange their medals for the George Cross. The first Albert Medal was awarded in 1878 and the last in 1939. [...] The heart of this publication is the story of Marine Albert Streams, who served from 1921 until he was killed on the beaches of Sicily in 1943 when he was MOA to the CO of 41 RM Commando. [...] the King personally presented him with his Albert Medal which he won when the Marines turret of HMS Devonshire blew up in 1929."-- Provided by the publisher. This publication also covers five other medallists and two other associated awards.

The warship Mary Rose : the life and times of King Henry VIII's flagship /David Childs.
"This book tells the full story of the construction and career of the ship, placing it firmly within the colourful context of Tudor politics, Court life and the developing administration of a permanent navy. However it also brings the story down to the present day, with chapters on the recovery and the new ideas and information thrown up by the massive programme of archaeological work since undertaken."--Dust jacket.

The press gang : naval impressment and its opponents in Georgian Britain /Nicholas Rogers.
The press gang, and its forcible recruitment of sailors to man the Royal Navy in times of war, acquired notoriety for depriving men of their liberty and carrying them away to a harsh life at sea, sometimes for years at a time. Nicholas Rogers explains exactly how the press gang worked, whom it was aimed at and how successful it was in achieving its ends. He also shows the limits to its operations and the press gang's need for cooperation from local authorities, who were by no means prepared to support it.--From publisher description.

The man who buried Nelson : the surprising life of Robert Mylne /Robert Ward.
This is a biography of Robert Mylne, who was born in Edinburgh in 1733 and was descended from a line of Master Masons to the Scottish Crown. He came to London at the age of 26 and won a competition to design and build Blackfriars Bridge. Following on from that he became Surveyor to St Paul's Cathedral, clerk of works to Greenwich Hospital and engineer to London's main waterworks. In his role as Surveyor of St Paul's, he was responsible for fitting out the cathedral for Nelson's funeral. Mylne prepared the sarcophagus which would rest above floor level in the crypt and arranged to place into it a secret hoard of coins and medals; this event is described for the first time in the book. There are 40 black and white photos illustrating Mylne's life and works. There are extensive notes, a list of sources and a detailed index.

This investigation into the lunar theory and tables of the moon's motion of German mathematician and astronomer Tobias Mayer looks at the important application they had in the field of navigation through the determination of longitude at sea using the method of 'lunar distances'. Included are lists of figures and displays and appendices on versions of lunar equations, results of a spreadsheet analysis and manuscript sources.

Cargo ships : A colour portfolio /David L. Williams & Richard de Kerbrech.
"In this new title, the authors examine the great variety of freighters and coasters visible in ports and harbours around the British coast. Apart from the obvious interest to wartime enthusiasts in seeing images of long-lost ships, the beauty of these photographs is that they also show how much of the dockyard infrastructure such as cranes and warehouses that are now as much a part of history as the ships."--Provided by the publisher.

The plot against Pepys / James Long and Ben Long.
Drawing on Pepys's own account, this tells the story of the imprisonment of Samuel Pepys in the Tower of London, charged with treason, in 1679. Then Secretary of the Admiralty, Pepys was said to have passed naval secrets to the French. Set against a fear of Catholic plots and a weakened monarchy, Pepys was incriminated by his political rivals and evidence provided by his accuser Colonel John Scott. Against the odds, Pepys successfully demonstrated that the charges were false and cleared his name. The text is supported by detailed notes and a bibliography.

The biographical encyclopedia of astronomers / editor in chief, Thomas Hockey ; senior editors, Virginia Trimble, Thomas R. Williams.
"The Biographical Encyclopedia of Astronomers is a unique and valuable resource for historians and astronomers alike. The two volumes include approximately 1550 biographical sketches of astronomers from antiquity to modern times. It is the collective work of about 400 authors edited by an editorial board of nine historians and astronomers, and provides additional details on the nature of an entry and some summary statistics on the content of entries. This new reference provides biographical information on astronomers and cosmologists by utilizing contemporary historical scholarship. Individual entries vary from 100 to 1500 words, including the likes of the superluminaries such as Newton and Einstein, as well as lesser-known astronomers like Galileo's acolyte, Mario Guiducci. A comprehensive contributor index helps researchers to identify the authors of important scientific topics and treatises."--Provided by the publisher.
