The biographical encyclopedia of astronomers / editor in chief, Thomas Hockey ; senior editors, Virginia Trimble, Thomas R. Williams.
"The Biographical Encyclopedia of Astronomers is a unique and valuable resource for historians and astronomers alike. The two volumes include approximately 1550 biographical sketches of astronomers from antiquity to modern times. It is the collective work of about 400 authors edited by an editorial board of nine historians and astronomers, and provides additional details on the nature of an entry and some summary statistics on the content of entries. This new reference provides biographical information on astronomers and cosmologists by utilizing contemporary historical scholarship. Individual entries vary from 100 to 1500 words, including the likes of the superluminaries such as Newton and Einstein, as well as lesser-known astronomers like Galileo's acolyte, Mario Guiducci. A comprehensive contributor index helps researchers to identify the authors of important scientific topics and treatises."--Provided by the publisher.

Canaris : the life and death of Hitler's spymaster /Michael Mueller ; translated by Geoffrey Brooks.
This is an account of the life of Wilhelm Canaris, head of the Abwehr, Hitler's military intelligence service. Canaris was born in 1887. He was an intelligence officer aboard the Dresden at the beginning of the First World War. He was appointed to head the Abwehr in 1934, a post he held for 9 years. Ships and science : the birth of naval architecture in the scientific revolution, 1600-1800 /Larrie D. Ferreiro.
"In Ships and Science, Ferreiro argues that the birth of naval architecture formed an integral part of the scientific revolution. Using Bouguer's work [Traitâe du navire - Treatise of the ship] as a cornerstone, Ferreiro traces the intriguing and often unexpected development of this new discipline and describes its practical application to ship design in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries"--Dust jacket.

Glover supplied warships to the new government and played a key role in the industrialisation of Japan. He helped to establish businesses contributing to Mitsubishi's early growth and diversification and the formation of the Japan Brewery Company (now Kirin). Passenger liners in colour / David L. Williams and Richard de Kerbrech.
"The final golden age of the ocean-going passenger liner was from the mid-1950s through to the late 1960s, when famous liners such as the Queen Mary, the Queen Elizabeth, The United States, and the France, traversed the Atlantic. They offered an unrivalled quality of service as they sought to become holders of the 'Blue Riband' for the fastest crossing. With nostalgia for the great days of luxury travel increasing, publication of this tribute to the last generation of ocean-going passenger liners is opportune. Some of the liners featured will be well-known others less so. The book will appeal to all those who remember travelling on the great liners during these years as well as all maritime enthusiasts."--Provided by the publisher.

Smuggling in the British Isles : a history /by Richard Platt.
"The extraordinary emergence of smuggling during the eighteenth and nineteenth century forms much of the modern history of the coastline of the British Isles, and the time-honoured image of the fisherman-cum-smuggler has intrigued historians and fiction-writers alike for decades. But how accurate is this traditional picture of the smuggler? In this fascinating history, maritime specialist Richard Platt explores the captivating story of smuggling in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Britain, when high taxes led to a dramatic increase in illegal imports. As the 'free-trade' grew, smugglers openly landed contraband in full view of the customs authorities: columns of heavily armed thugs protected the cargoes. Smuggling in the British Isles documents every aspect of the smuggling industry, from the practical problems of stowing contraband and getting it to its final destination to the legendary hiding places and caves used to conceal goods until their sale. This compelling book will appeal to all those with an interest in the sea and its history, and shows how a small-scale trade that enjoyed widespread popular support grew into a vast and violent industry."--Provided by the publisher.

Sea battles and naval heroes in the 17th-century Dutch republic / Peter Sigmond and Wouter Kloek.
"In the 17th century the sea was crucially important to all the inhabitants of the Republic of the United Provinces. The wealth of the regents was based on merchant shipping and overseas trade, and the fishing industry was vital for the feeding of the whole population. Safety at sea and protection against enemy invasion were guaranteed by the war fleet. Consequently, the navy and the admirals who commanded the fleet were at the centre of attention. After all, their success of failure determined the fate of many. If they were successful they were worshipped; if they lost. they were abused by the mob. Many paintings, prints, drawings and objects in the Rijksmuseum bear witness to these men and their fortunes at sea. There are splendid images of sea battles and portraits of admirals and their ships. But what do these wonderful pictures tell us? Why were they made? What do they really show, and how did they originate?"--Back cover.
