Mr. Pepys : an introduction to the Diary together with a sketch of his later life /by J.R. Tanner.
This book gives a brief summary of the contents of Pepys's diaries, arranged by various topics rather than chronologically. Topics include: Pepys's earlier life; his wife, Elizabeth; his home life, including friends and neighbours, food and clothes; his artistic, cultural and scientific pursuits; and his work as Clerk of the Acts and at the Admiralty. There is a chapter on Pepys's personal characteristics, gleaned from Diary entries. There is an assessment of the Diary as a work of literature. The chapter on his later life covers the years 1669, the year the Diary came to an end, until 1703, the year of his death. The book contains a 'biographical summary' or timeline, of Pepys's life and career, and an index.

A history of intellectual property in 50 objects / edited by Claudy Op den Kamp and Dan Hunter.
"What do the Mona Lisa, the light bulb, and a Lego brick have in common? The answer - intellectual property (IP) - may be surprising, because IP laws are all about us, but go mostly unrecognized. They are complicated and arcane, and few people understand why they should care about copyright, patents, and trademarks. In this lustrous collection, Claudy Op den Kamp and Dan Hunter have brought together a group of contributors - drawn from around the globe in fields including law, history, sociology, science and technology, media, and even horticulture - to tell a history of IP in 50 objects. These objects not only demonstrate the significance of the IP system, but also show how IP has developed and how it has influenced history. Each object is at the core of a story that will be appreciated by anyone interested in how great innovations offer a unique window into our past, present, and future."--Provided by the publisher.

People and the sea : a maritime archaeological research agenda for England /edited by Jesse Ransley and Fraser Sturt ; with Justin Dix, Jon Adams and Lucy Blue.
"The volume presents the conclusions of a research assessment funded by English Heritage which drew together the broad community of scholars interested in marine and maritime affairs (be they working in academia, industry or a-vocationally), with a remit of both quantifying the known record and establishing a clear research agenda for the future. The result is an unrivalled exploration of our maritime heritage and a challenging agenda for the future. Britain is a maritime nation. Thus understanding the changing record of people's relationships with, and use of the sea is key to interpreting the archaeological record. People and the Sea considers all aspects of our maritime heritage; from the submerged landscapes created by changes in sea-level over the last million years, to the physical development of the modern coastline, through to ports, their hinterlands and associated maritime communities. It investigates the nature of seafaring, its associated material culture as well as people changing perceptions and interactions with the sea. Chronological chapters, from the Palaeolithic to the 20th century, all consider a number of key themes, exploring both the current state of knowledge and priorities for future research. While the focus is on England, the themes explored are applicable to any coastal community, both in the UK and the near Continent. Written by leading academics, in consultation with numerous specialists, People and the Sea provides an unrivalled exploration of our maritime heritage and sets a challenging agenda for future research."--Provided by the publisher.

Royal Navy search and rescue : a centenary celebration /David Morris ; foreword by Eric Brown.
"Today, the sight of a helicopter speeding toward some destination is familiar enough, but take a moment to consider: is there a life at stake? Is someone in peril and on a knife edge of survival, and will the helicopter crew be selflessly placing themselves in the most dangerous of situations for the sake of saving others? Ever since the First World War, aircraft of the Royal Naval Air Service and later the Fleet Air Arm have operated from land bases and ships at sea, flying search and rescue missions. In this book David Morris, Curator of Aircraft at the National Museum of the Royal Navy, tells the incredible story of Royal Navy search and rescue from the first mission by Sir Richard Bell-Davies VC to the present day."--Provided by the publisher.
