The Arctic sledging tableau in the centre of the Franklin Gallery, Royal Naval Exhibition, Chelsea

A view of the Arctic sledging tableau in the centre of the Franklin Gallery, Royal Naval Exhibition, Chelsea, with the entrance to the Nelson Gallery beyond. The tableau includes five waxwork mannequins in full Arctic clothing dragging a lightly laden sledge across a representation of ice. In front of them is an erected tent with another mariner in Arctic kit waiting by the tent for the sledging party. Beside the tent is another sledge with two sailors sitting on the side. In the background are cases of Franklin relics. On the wall are a number of large paintings, including (l-r) [unidentified], Sir James Clark Ross by Stephen Pearce , Sir Francis Leopold McClintock by Stephen Pearce, Sir Robert McClure by Stephen Pearce, The Arctic Council by Stephen Pearce, Sir George Nares by Stephen Pearce and the whaling captain William Penny by Stephen Pearce. These are interspersed with smaller portraits. A number of these are today in the National Portrait Gallery.
