A view down the port side of the replica of HMS 'Victory' (1765), Royal Naval Exhibition, Chelsea

A view down the port side from the bow of the replica of HMS 'Victory' (1765), Royal Naval Exhibition, Chelsea. An attendant is standing at the entrance to the route into the ship. The gun ports are open on the replica and hammocks, lashed up, can be seen on the poop deck bulwarks. According to the Illustrated Handbook visitors 'enter by the entry port - as in the original - and passing on to the middle or main deck... Visitors pass from this deck down the gangway to the lower or fighting deck, which is shown in the Chelsea model as it is supposed to have been on the morning of the battle of Trafalgar.' The visitor encountered a waxwork of the death scene of Lord Nelson on the orlop deck made by Mr John Tussaud and based on the painting by Devis (BHC2894).
